ICC tournaments return to Pakistan with Champions Trophy 2025
- ICC has named Pakistan as host of Champions Trophy 2025
- Pakistan has not hosted an international cricket match since 2009
- New Zealand recently cancelled its Pakistan tour over security concerns
Pakistan will get to host the 2025 Champions Trophy, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced Tuesday. Pakistan has been looking to host international series for a long time and the announcement came as a major relief to the country’s cricket board. The ICC has selected 11 full members and three associate members to host major tournaments over the next decade.
Pakistan won the Champions Trophy for the last time in 2017. However, it has been over a decade since Pakistan has hosted international cricket matches. International matches in Pakistan were discontinued after terrorist attacked a Sri Lankan team bus in 2009. New Zealand, who were scheduled to visit Pakistan for a series earlier this year, backed out of it citing security reasons.
Pakistan last hosted ICC matches in 1996 when it hosted the World Cup jointly with India and Sri Lanka.
While Pakistan is set to host the 2025 Champions Trophy, India will host the 2026 T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka as well as the 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 50-over World Cup with Bangladesh. India will already set to host the 2023 men’s Cricket World Cup.
The hosts for ICC tournaments from 2024 to 2031 are as follows:
2024 T20 World Cup: USA and West Indies
2025 Champions Trophy: Pakistan
2026 T20 World Cup: India and Sri Lanka
2027 World Cup: South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia
2028 T20 World Cup: Australia and New Zealand
2029 Champions Trophy: India
2030 T20 World Cup: England, Ireland and Scotland
2031 World Cup: India and Bangladesh
Following the announcement, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja wrote on Twitter, “It’s a matter of great pride and delight that Pakistan will be hosting ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This great news will surely excite millions of Pakistani fans, expats and world fans to see great teams and players in action and will allow the world to sample our hospitality.”
