Ahead of T20 World Cup, India set to test bench strength vs Sri Lanka
- India and Pakistan are grouped together in the T20 World Cup
- India's tour of Sri Lanka starts on July 18
- Shikhar Dhawan will lead the Indian team in Sri Lanka
India will face Sri Lanka in a limited-overs tour starting Sunday at Colombo. A three-match ODI series will be followed by as many T20 matches. A less experienced Indian side will be led by Shikhar Dhawan, who himself will by eyeing to become the fourth-fastest in history to score 6000 ODI runs. Some A team players including regular skipper Virat Kohli and his limited-overs deputy Rohit Sharma are prepping for a Test series against Joe Root's men in England.
Why is the Sri Lanka tour important for India?
The groupings of the ICC T20 World Cup were announced on Friday. India has been placed with New Zealand, Afghanistan and arch-rivals Pakistan in group B of the Super 12. The tournament, only months away, will be held from October 17 to November 14. Keeping in mind the quality and quantity of Indian T20 cricketers that have come up in the past years, the Indian think tank is going to have a tough time selecting the best lot that will fly to Oman and UAE for the World Cup.
However, with the Sri Lanka series, possibly the only international T20 cricket India is going to play before the World Cup, the selectors might get a rough idea of the form of the players.
From a player's - who is on the Sri Lankan tour - perspective this series will be a chance to showcase their best cricket and make a strong case for their selection.
