Three people were killed after police opened fire to quell a mob that went on a rampage irked over a social media post allegedly put out by a Congress legislator’s relative, as a city locality witnessed arson and violence. The police have booked over 100 people for the violence. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has directed police to take strict action against the perpetrators.
Here’s what we know so far:
1. A clash broke out on Tuesday night and violence continued till the wee hours of Wednesday, apparently prompted by a ‘communally sensitive’ online post. Hundreds of people went on the rampage and set DJ Halli police station on fire.
2. Three people lost their lives in police firing, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant told PTI.
3. Scores of people, including around 50 policemen, were injured in the violence.
4. 110 people have been arrested in connection with the incident at Pulakeshi Nagar.
5. A Congress MLA’s residence and a police station were targeted by the angry mob.
6. Naveen, who allegedly posted the social media post, has been arrested.
7. The CM has said that government will not tolerate such instigation and mischief.
8. Curfew has been imposed in the affected areas in and around DJ Halli and KG Halli.
9. Muzamil Pasha, an SDPI leader has been arrested in connection with violence at DJ Halli police station, reported ANI.
10. Karnataka Minister CT Ravi told ANI that according to him the riot was planned. “Within an hour of a post on social media thousands of people gathered and damaged 200-300 vehicles and MLA’s residence. We’ll take serious action,” said the minister.
