After becoming only the third cricketer to
claim all 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match, New
Zealand’s Ajaz Patel took four wickets in the second innings to finish Day 3 of the second Test against India with figures of 14 wickets for
225 runs.

With this feat, Patel went past former
England pacer Ian Botham’s record for most wickets in a single Test against India. In the 1980 Mumbai Test, Botham took 13
wickets for 106 runs against India. On Sunday, Ajaz Patel toppled him from the
position with his breathtaking performance.

The Mumbai-born spinner also overcame the
likes of Australia’s Steve O’Keefe, who had registered figures of 12 for 70 in
a Test against India in 2017.

Pakistan’s Fazal Mahmood, pacer Andy
Roberts, Alan Davidson, Bruce Reid, Allan Donald and Geoff DyMock made up the
rest of the list. They all claimed 12 wickets in a Test against India on
separate occasions.

Ajaz now sits at the top of the list after
his remarkable performance in the second Test.

On Day 2 of the Mumbai Test, Ajaz became
only the third cricketer to claim 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match
after Jim Laker in 1956 and Anil Kumble in 1999. Laker achieved the feat
against Australia while Kumble did it against Pakistan.

Apart from Ajaz, Rachin Ravindra took three
wickets as Virat Kohli declared the Indian innings at 276 for the loss of seven
wickets. Mayank Agarwal again showcased his class at the top of the innings as
he finished as the top scorer with a brilliant knock of 62 runs.

Despite Patel’s achievement, New Zealand
face an uphill task to win the series finale after India declared their second
innings at 276 for seven to set the visitors a target of 540 runs.

The first Test ended in a draw.
