Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi’s wife Amruta Fadnavis said on Saturday that traffic jams are responsible for 3% of the divorces in Mumbai because people are unable to spend time with their families.

“I am saying this as a common citizen. Once I go out I see several issues incl potholes, traffic. Due to traffic, people are unable to give time to their families & 3% divorces in Mumbai are happening due to it,” Amruta said.

She added that she has been personally troubled by potholes on the roads. “Forget that I am the wife of Devendra Fadnavis. I am talking to you as a woman. I have also experienced traffic on the roads and the potholes and how they trouble us,” she said.

Mayor of Mumbai, Kishori Pednekar, responded to the claim, calling it baseless and ‘astonishing’. “Amruta Fadnavis is the wife of our former chief minister. Her allegation is astonishing that traffic leads to divorce. There can be many reasons for divorce but I have heard this for the first time,” she said.

Rajya Sabha MP and Deputy Leader of Shiv Sena, Priyanka Chaturvedi also reacted on Twitter, “Best (il)logic of the day award goes to the lady who claims 3% Mumbaikars are divorcing due to traffic on roads. Please take a holiday break rather than having a mind on brake. Bengaluru families please avoid reading this, can prove fatal for your marriages,” she wrote.

The two women have engaged in social media spat in the past as well. In October 2020, for instance, Amruta, who was VP and corporate head (West India) at Axis bank, had responded to a tweet by Chaturvedi appreciating Mumbai Police’s decision to transfer salary accounts of its staff to HDFC Bank from Axis Bank.

“Mumbai Police will transfer salary accounts of 50,000 cops from Axis bank soon. Much needed move considering how arbitrarily the bank was chosen and state government employees’ salary accounts moved overnight,” the MP said in the tweet.

Amruta responded to the tweet by saying, “Axis Bank is not my family Bank – it’s third-largest listed private sector bank and I’m an employee who has worked for the same bank for 18 years! How will an opportunistic दल बदलू understand this honesty & hard work! These accounts were acquired in 2005-basis technology & services.”
