Mohammed Siraj picked up the key wicket of David Warner early on the first day of the third Test in Sydney as play was stopped due to rain just seven overs with Australia at 21/1 on Thursday.

Siraj dismissed Warner (5) after forcing an edge from the southpaw in the fourth over of the match with Cheteshwar Pujara taking a regulation catch at first slip, prior to the weather turning for the worse.

Australia’s young debutant Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne were unbeaten at 14 and 2, respectively, when play was called off after 7.1 overs bowled.

The downpour arrived out of nowhere and the players had to run off the field as the ground staff rushed to get the covers on the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) pitch.

Warner, who is returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, showed intent in the opening exchanges but paid the price for chasing after a full, wide delivery from Siraj.

Meanwhile, Pucovski looked composed during the course of his stay in the middle so far.

Australia skipper Tim Paine won the toss and chose to bat first.

For India, Rohit Sharma was included in the playing XI in place of Mayank Agarwal and paceman Navdeep Saini is making his debut with Umesh Yadav out injured.

Australia also named two changes, with Warner and Pucovski replacing Joe Bur
