On May 28,
a 17-year-old girl got into a car with five others boys following a party at an
up-market pub in Hyderabad’s posh Jubilee Hills area. The boys had offered to
drop the girl home. However, they went to a pastry and coffee shop and switched
into an SUV. They then parked the car and took turns raping the woman while
others stood guard.

“After
sexually assaulting her inside the SUV, some of the accused outraged her
modesty again when they drove the SUV to the pub to drop her. This happened in
the basement, where her father later picked her up,” Times of India reported
citing a source.

Based on
the girl’s father’s complaint, police initially registered an “outraging the
modesty of a woman” case which was later changed into a rape charge. The
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have accused the K Chandrasekhar
Rao-led TRS government of shielding the accused.

The
National Commission for Women (NCW) sought a detailed report on the steps taken
by Telangana in ensuring the safety and security of women in Telangana.
