A suspended bridge has collapsed in Gujarat’s Morbi, leaving at least 40 dead. Police believe the death toll can rise since many are likely trapped under the collapsed structure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel about the help the latter needs from the central government.
The collapsed bridge was opened after renovations on October 26, 2022.
India has seen some major bridge collapses over the years. Here we bring to you five such instances:
Kadalundi River rail bridge, 2001
On July 21, 2001, one pillar of the Kadalundi River rail bridge in Kerala’s Kozhikode collapsed, leading to three carriages of the Mangalore-Chennai Mail falling into the Kadalundi river, leading to the death of 59 people. 241 individuals were injured in the disaster.

Mumbai foot overbridge, 2019
A foot overbridge in Mumbai that connects Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus’ north end with the Badaruddin Tayabji Lane station collapsed in 2019, leading to six deaths. The accident left 30 people injured.
Kolkata’s Vivekananda Road flyover, 2016
In 2016, the under-construction Vivekananda Road bridge in Kolkata collapsed at 12:40 PM IST. The bridge was constructed by a company called IVRCL, which has since been taken over by a consortium of banks. The accident led to 27 deaths and 80 injuries.

Kolkata’s Majerhat Bridge, 2018
Kolkata has been witness to another bridge collapse, this time on September 4, 2018. This was the Majerhat bridge in Alipore, in the city’s southern region. The bridge was also a part of the National Highway 12. The death toll was three in the incident while 25 people were injured. The bridge was renovated and opened for public use on December 4, 2020.
Surat Cable Bridge, 2014
Although not a bridge collapse specifically, a concrete slab weighing 650 tonnes collapsed from cable bridge in Surat, Gujarat, on May 25, 2014. This led to 10 workers dying on the spot while a further six were injured.
