Fast bowler
Jasprit Bumrah is renowned for his wicket-taking ability. He is India’s
strike bowler across the formats. Over the years, he has developed himself as
India’s prime pacer and the most reliable cog of the team.

He is now also
in contention for the Test captaincy position after Virat Kohli stepped down
from the role last week. Bumrah is an economical pacer and his average is also
magnificent. In Tests, he so far has taken 113 wickets, 109 in ODIs and 66 in
T20Is.

As India’s main
strike bowler, Bumrah is his captain’s go-to bowler. He can take wickets in
regular intervals and leave the opposition in tatter.

On Wednesday,
the pacer broke a deadlock when he dismissed Janneman Malan of South Africa in
the first ODI of a three-match series.

With this
dismissal, Bumrah took his first wicket in the powerplay in over three years.
He last took a wicket in the powerplay in the 2019 World Cup in England when he
dismissed New Zealand’s Martin Guptill in the semifinal.

In the past
three years, he bowled 233 deliveries in ODI cricket and conceded 170 runs. It
was, meanwhile, Bumrah’s 109th ODI wicket. Bumrah so far played 68 ODIs for
India.

Asked about
taking up India Test captaincy if offered, Bumrah said that if the opportunity
comes, he is ready to take up the India captaincy. “If given an opportunity, it
would be an honour. I don’t think any player would say no. There’s no bigger
feeling than that,” Bumrah said at a press conference on Monday.

The fast bowler
has been promoted to the vice-captaincy of the Indian team for the three-match
ODI series in South Africa that starts on Wednesday. KL Rahul is the stand-in

recovered from a hamstring injury.

Bumrah took two wickets on Wednesday in the first ODI against South Africa.
