Reports of actor Sonu Sood being surveyed by the Income Tax Department in an alleged tax evasion probe triggered a support campaign on social media. Fans of the actor and political leaders have come out in favour of the humanitarian.

Ever since the IT department has raided six of Sonu Sood‘s properties in Mumbai and Lucknow, Twitter is flooded with users slamming the government for launching a probe against him. Hashtags like ‘#wesupportSonuSood’ and ‘#SonuSoodrealhero’ became some of the Twitter trends on Thursday.

Several political leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Aatishi, TMC’s Mahua Moitra and many others have also come in support of the actor.

While some Twitter users have called out the government for harassing a philanthropist like Sonu Sood instead of getting fugitive Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi back, some highlighted the practice of favouritism in the system.

One Twitter user said that actor Kangana Ranaut, who compared Mumbai to Pakistan got Y+ security and Sonu Sood, who has been working for the country is being paid back with IT raids.

Some Twitter users have also pointed out that Sonu Sood is being surveyed because he praised AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and because he met with him last week. 

Politicians support Sonu Sood

Meanwhile, several Indian politicians including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Raghav Chaddha, TMC leader Mahua Moitra have come out in open support of actor Sonu Sood.

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra also took to Twitter to support the actor and pointed that he is being targeted by the BJP government because of his inclination towards Aam Aadmi Party. She further asked if the government will send Enforcement Directorate next to harass Sood.

Congress’s Digital Communications and Social Media coordinator Gaurav Pandhi called Sonu Sood ‘an easy target’ for the BJP and asked the government when Adani will be surveyed by the IT. 

Six of Sonu Sood’s properties in Mumbai and Lucknow were raided by the IT department on Thursday in relation to an alleged tax evasion probe.

The actor, who enjoys a huge fan base, rose to massive prominence in 2020, when he helped thousands of migrant workers get home from cities during the nationwide COVID-19 induced lockdown. The actor is hailed as “the hero of India” for his continuous pandemic relief work and humanitarian aid.
