Don Young, Alaska U.S representative, died on Friday. He was 88 years old.

Young, a Republican and the longest-serving member of Congress, passed out on a trip from Los Angeles to Seattle and was unable to be revived, according to Jack Ferguson, Young’s chief of staff. His wife, Anne, was by his side, according to a statement released by his office.

Young, had been the representative for Alaska since 1973 when he won a special election after incumbent Democrat Nick Begich went missing. Begich won the 1972 election even though he had vanished in a plane crash just weeks before, although he died later that year.

Young was elected to Begich’s seat in a special election in March 1973 and has served ever since. Following the retirement of former Rep. John Conyers, he was named Dean of the House in 2017.

In 1973, he was elected as the United States Representative for Alaska’s at-large congressional district, and he is known as the state’s third senator. In 2012, he began his 22nd straight term.

He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957 before settling in Alaska in 1959, just after the state was established. He piloted a tugboat, maintained a barge enterprise delivering products and supplies to settlements along the Yukon River, and taught fifth grade at the local Bureau of Indian Affairs elementary school before entering politics. With his wife Lula Fredson, he had two daughters.

Young’s net worth was estimated to be $2 million. Young was married to an indigenous Gwich’in woman named Lula Fredson. She volunteered to work as the manager of his congressional office in Washington, D.C.

They were members of the Episcopal Church and had two daughters. Lula passed away on August 1, 2009, at the age of 67. Young announced his engagement to Anne Garland Walton, a flight nurse from Fairbanks, on August 17, 2014. On June 9, 2015, they tied the knot. At the time, she was 76 years old.

According to state law, GOP Gov. Mike Dunleavy must call a special election to fill Young’s seat within three months of his death, but no sooner than two months.
