Germany

Macedonia

Answer: Germany

German Unity Day is a public holiday in Germany that is
observed on October 3rd. It celebrates the unification of Germany in 1990 when
the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic
Republic merged to form a single German state for the first time
since 1945. Since 1990, when Germany’s reunification was finally achieved, the
3rd of October has been the German National Holiday.

An alternate date for commemorating the reunification may
have been 9 November 1989, which also happened to be the anniversary of the
German Republic’s declaration in 1918 and the defeat of Hitler‘s first coup
attempt in 1923. However, because the 9th of November was the anniversary of
the first large-scale Nazi-led pogroms against Jews in 1938 (Kristallnacht),
the day was deemed unfit for a national holiday. As a result, the “Day of German Unity” on 17 June,
the Federal Republic of Germany’s national holiday since 1954, was replaced by
3 October 1990, the day of the formal reunification.

Every year, the Day of German Unity is commemorated with a formal event as well as a citizens’ celebration.
