Amazon Quiz (September 9, 2021): A court in Ecuador ruled in favour of revoking the citizenship of which current prisoner in the UK?

a) Edward Snowden

b) Julian Assange

c) Coleen Rowley

d) Chelsea Manning

Answer: b) Julian Assange

Ecuador revoked Julian Assange’s
citizenship on July 26, 2021. Assange is the founder of Wikileaks and is
presently imprisoned in the United Kingdom.

In response to a lawsuit made by
Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry, the South American country’s legal system formally
alerted the Australian of the nullity of his naturalisation in a letter.

When a naturalisation is granted
based on the concealing of crucial information, falsified documents, or fraud,
it is termed harmful. According to Ecuadorian officials, Assange’s citizenship
letter had several irregularities, including various signatures, the
possibility of document modification, and unpaid payments, among other things.

According to Assange’s lawyer, Carlos
Poveda, the judgement was taken without due process, and Assange was not
permitted to testify in the case.

“On the date (Assange) was cited
he was deprived of his liberty and with a health crisis inside the deprivation
of liberty center where he was being held,” Poveda said.

Poveda stated that he will seek
appeals in order to have the judgement clarified and amplified. “More than
the importance of nationality, it is a matter of respecting rights and
following due process in withdrawing nationality.”

In January 2018, Assange was granted
Ecuadorian citizenship by the administration
of then-President Lenn Moreno.
