Answer: 2017

The new Rs 50 banknote that came into circulation in India in 2017 features a Hampi chariot on the reverse side of the note, while the other side features a photo of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that a newly designed Rs 50 note was being worked upon on November 10, 2016, and the note was subsequently announced nearly a year later on August 18, 2017 as part of the Mahatma Gandhi New Series of banknotes.

The stone chariot depicted in the banknote is an iconic monument, built by King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, who got inspired by the Konark Sun Temple in Odissa while fighting a battle there.

According to Karnataka.com, “the chariot is a colossal structure which shows the skill of the earlier craftsmen and architects. The beauty of the chariot lies in the fact that it looks like one solid structure but in fact, has been built by slabs of granite whose linkages have been cleverly hidden with artistic designs.”

There are myths associated with the chariot too: according to folklore, the world will come to an end if the chariot ever moves.

The Hampi chariot is also recognized internationally as a site of cultural heritage and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
