women’s doubles final of the Tennis in the Land tournament and ended runners-up
at the WTA 250 event in Cleveland.
Mirza and McHale lost the final 5-7 3-6 to the Japanese pair of Shuko Aoyama
and Ena Shibahara in one hour and 24 minutes.
In the first set of the match,
Mirza and her American partner fought hard against the Japanese team. The duo
fell short again in the 11th game, as Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara took the
first set.
With an early break in the second set, the top-seeded Japanese
team left no room for error and raced to the victory with relative ease.
Sania
Mirza received USD 3,000 in prize money and gained 180 ranking points to her
purse thanks to her first final of the season.’
Leading up to the final, Mirza and McHale
had won all three of their prior encounters without dropping a set. In the semi-finals
of the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland, Mirza and McHale defeated the
Norwegian-American duo of Ulrikke Eikeri and Catherine Harrison 7-6(5), 6-2.
