Milkha Singh was an Indian track and field sprinter who died of COVID-19 complications on June 18, 2021, at the age of 91. He is the only athlete to win gold in the 400m race at the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games.
He is also a gold-medallist in the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games. He represented India at the 1956 Summer Olympics that was held in Melbourne, the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
He is a Padma Shri award recipient which is India's fourth-highest civilian honour.
He is best remembered for his 400m final at the 1960 Olympic Games in which he finished fourth.
He led the race till the 200m mark but failed to keep the momentum going as other racers passed him. Milkha's fourth-place time of 45.73 seconds was a record for almost 40 years.
Milkha participated in the 1960 International Athletic competition in Lahore, Pakistan. He won the race by beating favorite Abdul Khaliq.
In an interview with BBC, Milkha had said that Pakistan president Gen Ayub, during the ceremony, told him: "You came to Pakistan and did not run, you actually flew in Pakistan."
Milkha further added that he was told: "Pakistan bestows upon you the title of the Flying Sikh."
He was born on November 20, 1929. He was one of 15 siblings, eight of whom died before the Partition of India. He was reportedly orphaned during the partition when his parents, a brother and two sisters were killed in the violence.
