Squirrel Monkey

Answer: Orang-utan

While the Tokyo Olympics were going on, the World Wildlife Fund picked out some incredible wildlife from all across the world. Orang-utan was named world’s largest tree-dwelling mammal. A mammal that lives under the canopy of rainforests in Borneo and Sumatra, Orang-utan weigh 60-85 kg and are almost a meter tall.

However, females are shorter and weigh in around half the amount of their male counterparts.

In 2017, a new species of orangutan was described by scientists; the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis). All three species are classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

With opposable toes on their feet Orang-utans put their arm span of nearly 2 m (6 ft) to to use to swing between branches and eat fruit, small leaves and tree-bark. Owing to their lighter weight, the females build nests in the trees. However, the adult males usually sleep down on the ground.

The Malay word ‘orang-utan’ means ‘man of the forest’. There are an estimated 10,000-12,000 Bornean orang-utans in the wild, with Sumatran orang-utans being in even lesser numbers. Orang-utans are considered some of the most intelligent primates. Using a range of sophisticated tools, they build elaborate sleeping nests each night out branches and foliage. These mammals are so intelligent that their learning abilities have been studied extensively. It is understood that there may be different cultures within populations.
