Amazon Quiz (23rd October 2021): Islam Qala, a border town in Afghanistan is the main crossing point to which of these countries?

a) Turkmenistan

b) Uzbekistan

c) Iran

d) Pakistan

Answer: (b) Uzbekistan

Islam Qala, formerly known as Kafir Qala, is a border town
in Afghanistan‘s western Herat province, on the Iran–Afghanistan border. It is
the official land entrance from neighbouring Iran’s Taybad.

Islam Qala is located in Herat Province’s Kohsan District
and is connected to the city of Herat through the Islam Qala-Herat Highway.
Because a large amount of trade between Afghanistan and other nations goes
through this town, it has a significant economic impact on Afghanistan. The
town is served by the Asian Highway Network, which runs from Tokyo, Japan, to
Istanbul, Turkey, where it links to the E80, which leads to Lisbon.

The population of the town is around 16,408.  The Afghan Border Police (ABP) is in charge of
border security, while the Afghan National Police (ANP) is in charge of all
other law enforcement duties. At Islam Qala, the Afghan Armed Forces have a
small base.

This city is the site of the Persians’ triumph against the
Afghans (May 4 to July 1, 1729). The Persians were able to advance and seize
Herat as a result of this.

On February 13, 2021, a fire at Islam Qala burned hundreds
of tanker tankers owing to resource mismanagement and worker ineptitude.

The Taliban took control of the town, which is the major
border crossing between Iran and Afghanistan, early on July 9, 2021.
