Answer: Iguana

Iguana is a type of herbivorous lizard often found in tropical regions like the Caribbean, Mexico, South America and Central America. Iguanas were first defined in the year 1978 in a book titled ‘Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena’, written by Australian naturalist Joesph Nicolaus Laurenti.

This reptile is mainly of two types- the green iguana, which is the popular one between the two and is often domesticated, and the Lesser Antillean iguana, which hails from the Lesser Antilles.

The name ‘iguana’ comes from the initial Taino word for the reptile- ‘iwana’.

Iguanas vary in length and can range from 5 to 6 ft in length. This length includes their tails as well. Their physical structure consists of long scales that begin from their neck and follow all the way down to their tails.

Their scales can differ in terms of their body parts. While some large and round scales are found around their neck, the smaller ones make up for their ventral sides. Their scales can vary in colour.

Iguanas have the ability to view colours, shadows, shapes and movements from a far distance. Their visual power helps them in finding food and moving through a forest.
