Hailing from the city of Valencia in Spain, Borja Catanesi is a street musician who is particularly renowned for being an accomplished guitarist and live performer.
Primarily dabbling in funk, reggae, and blues, Catanesi is known for producing his entire sound live, using a guitar, a loop pedal, beatboxing, and harmonisation.
Born in 1995, Catanesi was introduced to the world of music at an early age and took music theory and piano lessons as a child before finally taking up the guitar when he was 15 years old.
Within five years after picking up the guitar, Catanesi won several international street music competitions, including the famed Rome International Buskers Festival.
As it stands, Catanesi has performed in more than 30 countries, including India, and maintains that his music elicits the same response across cultures.
Asked by Rolling Stone about whether his music elicited the same response in India as it does in the West, Catanesi said, “In fact yes. Even if the cultural difference is very big, like in India. I was there last year. It’s interesting to see the people who walk by first and think: ‘What are you doing here, in the middle of the sidewalk?’ – The motorbikes almost hit you, honking at you. I don’t know, I like confronting myself with these strange situations. Unique things that are not so commonplace. And in the end they become really cool. For example, when suddenly an Indian holy man, ‘Baba’ or ‘Sadu’, danced with me. As if that were normal.”
