The Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), in July, invited bids for Rs 19,041 crore to roll out high-speed broadband services in the rural areas across 16 states. The BBNL will create, upgrade, operate and maintain broadband connection through a public-private partnership model for 30 years. The Ministry of Ministry of Communications will provide the maximum grant of Rs 19,041 crore as Viability Gap Funding for this project.

The project will cover an estimated 3.61 lakh villages across states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Currently, BharatNet provides broadband connection in all the Gram Panchayats (GPs) of the country. It has laid OFC (primarily) between blocks and Gram Panchayats in rural areas. It now aims to connect and enhance all the villages in the country, which is approximately 6.43 lakhs, inclusive of Gram Panchayats.

The selected bidder after selection will create a special purpose vehicle (SPV) and sign the agreement. The bidder will achieve financial closure and start creation, upgradation, operation and maintenance and utilisation of BharatNet for 30 years.
BharatNet infrastructure is a middle mile network, which is at presently given at lease to service providers, who provide affordable high-speed broadband in rural areas of the country, including individuals, households and institutions. It is a government’s flagship project. It is believed to be the backbone of Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi’s ‘Digital India’ vision, which aims to reduce the digital divide between urban and rural India.
