Javanese origin Batik
is a technique of wax-resistant cloth dyeing. It is
prepared either by drawing lines and dots of the resist spouted tool known as canting or through printing with a copper stamp known as cap. The applied wax resists dyes
allowing the handicrafts worker to selectively colour by soaking the cloth in a
single colour followed by removal of the wax with hot water & repeating
with multiple colours, if need be.

Batik making tradition is found in many cultures like India, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, China, Malaysia & more notably in Indonesia. Diverse patterns in the region of Java is influenced by a multiplicity of cultures. It is one of the most developed forms w.r.t., pattern, technique and workmanship quality. In October 2009, UNESCO selected it as the “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. During the same year, it also recognized “Education & training in Indonesian Batik intangible cultural heritage for elementary, junior, senior, vocational school & polytechnic students in collaboration with Batik Museum” for the Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, in Register of Good Safeguarding Practices List.

Indonesians consider Batik as a cultural
icon and the “National Batik Day” is celebrated every year on October
2. Indonesians still wear batik on a daily basis for casual & formal
occasions.
