Answer: Japan
The shrine pictured in photo is the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
The earliest structures of the shrine was built in or around 711 AD on the Inariyama hill in southwestern Kyoto, but more than a century later in 816 AD, the shrine was relocated at the request of a monk.
More than seven centuries after the first structures were built, the shrine was expanded in 1499 AD, when some of the main structures that are still in existence today were built.
The Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine is notable for its rows of ‘torii’ gates, and features as many as 1,000 such gates along its main path.
The shrine itself sits at the base of a mountain, and includes a 4 kilometre long trail to the top of the mountain that takes approximately two hours to walk up.
The main walk in itself is a pilgrimage route, and beyond its spiritual and religious significance, the view of Kyoto from the top of the mountain is a spectacular one.
The Fushimi Inari Taisha has been featured in several works of popular culture, including the Oscar-winning 2005 film, ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, the 2011 documentary film ‘Samsara’, as well as a popular manga series (and later, an anime series) known as ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ (also known as Samurai X in English).
