Detroit
Answer: Detroit
Also known as the Motor City or Motown, Detroit is the largest city in Michigan, one of the biggest hubs in the US, and is the centre of the US automobile industry.
Detroit is situated between the east coast and Chicago and is a well-connected city with an abundance of natural resources, making it a prime location for manufacturing.
The city’s connection with the automobile industry goes back a while.
Ford founder Henry Ford and Oldsmobile founder Ransom Olds, two of the most important figures in the turn-of-the century were both born near Detroit and started their businesses there.
Old’s invention of the assembly line, and Ford’s feat of advancing that to a conveyor belt assembly in 1913 enabled Detroit to produce automobiles at a rate that could not be matched by any other US city at the time.
This, in turn, helped the city rake in money, which was invested in research and development, allowing Detroit to get far ahead of other regional cities at the time.
With the auto industry flourishing in Detroit, several new manufacturers set up shop, attracting specialists from the region, and indeed, from across the country.
General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler all set up shop in Detroit by 1924, and by 1950, the city had 296,000 jobs in the automobile industry alone.
