Amazon Quiz: Which is the world’s largest active version of this?

A. Mauna Loa

B. Fuego

C. Erta Ale

D. La Palma

Answer: Mauna Loa

Mount Loa, which roughly
translates to Long Mountain in English, is one the five volcanoes that form the
island of Hawaii in the US State of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. It is the
largest subaerial volcano in terms of both mass and volume and is historically considered
the largest volcano on Earth. It is dwarfed only by Tamu Massif, an extinct
submarine shield volcano in the northwest Pacific Ocean.

It is an active shield volcano with
relatively gentle slopes and a volume estimated at approximately 18,000 cubic
miles (75,000 cubic kilometres). However, its peak is around 125 feet (38m)
lower than that of its neighbour Mauna Kea. Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa is
silica-poor and fluid in nature and it tends to be non-explosive.

It is estimated Mauna Lia has
been erupting for at least 700,000 years and it may have emerged from sea level
around 400,000 years ago. Its magma comes from the Hawaii hotspot, which has
been responsible for the creation of the Hawaii island chain over tens of
millions of years.

The volcano’s most recently erupted
from March 24 to April 15 in 1984. There have been no fatalities from any of Mauna
Loa’s recent eruptions although the eruptions in 1926 and 1950 destroyed
villages.

Mauna Loa is part of the Decade
Volcanoes program, which encourages studies of the world’s most dangerous
volcanoes.
