A law banning plastic packaging for 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables came into force in France on January 31, 2021. The move came with the aim to end the ‘aberration’ of overwrapped carrots, bananas, and apples, the government said. The ban would also apply to cucumbers, aubergines, courgettes, oranges, kiwis, pears, lemons, among other varieties.
With this, the French government believes it will cut down more than one billion items of single-use plastic packaging in a year, with President Emmanual Macron calling the law ‘a real revolution’, according to a report in The Guardian. This will help the country gradually eliminate all single-use plastics by 2040.
