Answer: NAL
National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) is India’s first and largest aerospace research and development organisation. It was founded in 1959 by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Delhi. The company collaborates closely with HAL, DRDO, and ISRO and is in charge of designing commercial aircraft in India. It focuses on advanced research topics in aerospace and allied sciences.
NAL is headquartered in Bengaluru, India, and employs around 2,500 people, including 350 full-time R&D professionals. The Nilakantan Wind Tunnel Centre and a computerised fatigue test facility are among the facilities available at NAL. NAL also provides resources for investigating malfunctions and accidents in the aerospace engineering arena.
The National Aeronautical Research Laboratory (NARL) was established in Delhi on June 1, 1959, with Dr. P Nilakantan as its first Director. In March 1960, it established the National Aeronautical Laboratory in the stables of the Maharaja of Mysore Palace on Jayamahal Road in Bangalore (NAL). JRD Tata presided over the inaugural Executive Council, which included Prof Satish Dhawan and designer Dr. V M Ghatage among its members. It was renamed National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in April 1993 to reflect its increased role in the Indian space programme, diversified activities, and worldwide location.
NAL designed and built the Flosolver series of Indian supercomputers. With 1986, work began on the first computer to aid in computational fluid dynamics.
The CSIR has approved Rs 300 crores ($75 million) for the development of an aeroplane capable of carrying 70 passengers on short trips. The project will be known as RTA-70. NAL plans to utilise the funds to create a digital concept plane in about two years. A prototype would be produced and flown in four years once additional finance for the 2,000 crore project and its partners is secured. A 70-seat plane would be the initial prototype. NAL is building a family of aircraft with three variants: a 70-seater, a 50-seater, and an expanded 90-seater version called RTA-90 with the option of both Turbo prop and Turbo fan as a power source.
