Legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar died on Sunday at the age of 92. She was admitted at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on January 8 and was receiving treatment for COVID-19 and pneumonia. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to pay tribute to the singing legend.

“I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people,” PM Modi said in a tweet. 

“I consider it my honour that I have always received immense affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi. Spoke to her family and expressed condolences. Om Shanti,” he tweeted.

President Ram Nath Kovind said Mangeshkar‘s death was “heart-breaking”  and that the Bharat Ratna awardee’s “accomplishments will remain incomparable”.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who went to the hospital this morning, said in a tweet in Hindi that Mangeshkar’s death “irreparable loss to the country”. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said her death was a “personal loss” and that “it is not possible to put into words her contribution to the music world”.

Meanwhile, a two-day national mourning has been declared following Mangeshkar’s death. The national flag will fly at half mast, and a state funeral will be accorded to her. 

Over a career spanning over seven decades, Mangeshkar has sang over 25,000 in at least 36 languages. Known as the Queen of melody, Mangeshkar started training in singing at the age of five. She began her career as a singer in 1942.
