The Armed Forces Flag Day, also known as India’s Flag Day, is observed every year on December 7. The day is observed across the nation to honour the martyrs and soldiers in uniform who have bravely fought and continue to fight to protect the nation’s honour on our borders. It is devoted to raising funds for the welfare of Indian Armed Forces troops.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

Every year since 1949, India has observed Armed Forces Flag Day. On August 28, 1949, a committee appointed by the then-Defense Minister agreed to hold an annual Flag Day on December 7. It was shortly after Independence of india, and the welfare of the military personnel was a priority. The purpose of the Armed Forces Flag Day was to distribute small flags to the general public in exchange for donations. Flag Day takes on added significance because it emphasises Indians’ responsibilities to care for and work for their families as well as those who rely on our military services.

The Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) was established by the government to help ex-servicemen with their welfare and rehabilitation (ESM). Around 32 lakh ESM exist, with an additional 60,000 added each year as a result of superannuation.

Flag Day is a day when Indians convey their gratitude to the country’s military forces and remember those who have lost their lives while serving their country. On Flag Day, the three branches of the Indian armed forces – the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy – put on a variety of performances, carnivals, plays, and other cultural events to show the general public how their soldiers work to keep the country safe. Little flags in red, deep blue, and light blue that represent the three services are distributed in exchange for donations.
