A Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main candidate from Assam, who secured 99.8% marks in the exam this year, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly using an impersonator to appear for the test on his behalf. Candidate’s father and three other accomplices were also arrested in the case.

All the accused were apprehended after a complaint was filed alleging that the student did not appear for the exam that was held on September 5 and instead someone else sat for the test at a centre in Guwahati.

The person, who lodged the complaint on October 23, told the police that the candidate bagged a good rank in JEE Main and subsequently the police constituted a special investigation team to probe the allegation.

The police have said that the candidate admitted the fraud to a friend during a phone call which was recorded.

The person who filed the complaint also alleged that the invigilator of the exam had helped the accused.

The police have approached the National Testing Agency (NTA), the authority which conducted the test across the country.
