Bappi Lahiri, music composer and singer, died at age 69 in Mumbai, reported news agency PTI.

The legendary artist, who popularised disco music in India in the 80s and 90s, died following multiple health issues, a doctor treating him said on Wednesday.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Bappi Lahiri’s family issued a statement on Wednesday informing fans about the ‘Disco King’ of Bollywood’s demise, “It’s a deeply sad moment for us. The cremation will take place on the arrival of Bappa from LA tomorrow mid morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul. We will keep you updated – Mrs .Lahiri, Mr.Gobind Bansal, Bappa Lahiri, Rema lahir.”

Born in 1952, he was the only child of Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri, both Bengali singers in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He was also the maternal nephew of legendary singer Kishore Kumar. The two had collaborated several times in the past, including for the iconic song ‘Pag Ghungroo Bandh’ from Namak Halaal, Chalte Chalte,’ ‘Inteha Ho Gayi, and ‘Taaki O Taaki’.

Bappi Da, as he was fondly called, has two children, music director son Bappa Lahiri and daughter Rena Lahiri, who is a singer. He married wife Chitrani in 1977, who also comes from a family of singers. 

His son is married to Taneesha Lahiri, daughter of action director Mahendra Verma. The couple has a son named Krishh Lahiri.

The singer-composer, a familiar figure for many with his trademark gold chains that he wore for luck and his sunglasses, was known for his songs in several films of the late 70s-80s. These included “Chalte Chalte”, “Disco Dancer”, and “Sharaabi”.

His last Bollywood song was “Bhankas” for the 2020 film “Baaghi 3”.
