The Rajpur Vidhan Sabha constituency, falling under the Lok Sabha seat of Buxar, has been held by the Janata Dal (United) since 2005. The assembly seat was formed in 1977 and has been held by BJP two times, the only party to win elections more than one time other than JD(U).
The Rajpur assembly seat is currently held by Santosh Kumar Nirala of JD(U) who defeated Bishwanath Ram of BJP by 32,788 votes. Nirala has been holding the seat since 2010. Nirala was earlier defeated by her own party candidate Shyama Payari Devi in 2005.
