Soon after Congress MLA Charanjit Singh Channi was announced as the new Chief Minister of Punjab, BJP leaders raked up a three-year-old ‘Me Too’ case against him.

“Congress’s CM pick Charanjit Channi faces action in a 3-year-old MeToo case. He had allegedly sent an inappropriate text to a woman IAS officer in 2018. It was covered up but the case resurfaced when Punjab Women’s Commission sent notice. Well done, Rahul,” BJP leader Amit Malviya, who is its IT department head, tweeted.

In 2018, Channi had allegedly sent an inappropriate text to a woman IAS officer. The case was initially covered up but resurfaced earlier this year after Punjab Women’s Commission sent a notice to the state government.

In an interview with Tribune India, Channi had said in 2018 that the Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal was unnecessarily blowing things out of proportion as he wanted to take action on issues of Dalits.

He added that one message was unintentionally forwarded to the woman and that he had already apologised to her.

“Except for calling up the officer once or twice for official work, I have never called or approached her. A lot of wrong conjectures and incorrect facts are being added to the story,” he had told the outlet.

This is not the only controversy he has been embroiled in in the post. In another incident in 2018, he illegally constructed a road from a park outside his official residence in Sector 2, Chandigarh, after an astrologer advised him to have an east-facing entry to his residence for political gains.

Speaking exclusively to Opoyi, K Krishna Saagar Rao, Telangana BJP Chief Spokesperson, said that Congress had made a wrong choice.

“Presently, the Congress has fallen from the frying pan. It has caused grave injuries by having Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM. This man has a history of abusing women.. has a history believing in superstition.. and a history of abusing power. So, if Congress has chosen him over Amarinder Singh, that actually exposes Congress’ duplicity and hypocrisy in talking about quality politics,” Rao told Opoyi.
