Ten bodies recovered, 13 injured rescued as landslide hits Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur after a major landslide hit Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district, Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq said. At least 20 people were feared trapped under the debris. The landslide is reported to have hit a bus, a truck and a few smaller vehicles. Videos emerging from the site show huge rocks and boulders coming crashing down on the road.

Another video tweeted by news agency ANI shows ITBP jawans clearing the rubble and trying to free a trapped man.  The landslide occurred around 12.45 pm on Reckong Peo-Shimla Highway in Nugulsari area of Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. Ten people were rescued.

Earlier, ITBP tweeted about the incident that occurred at 12.45pm. They posted,  “A landslide reported on Reckong Peo- Shimla Highway in #Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh today at around 12.45 Hrs. One truck, a HRTC Bus and few vehicles reported came under the rubble. Many people reported being trapped. ITBP teams rushed for rescue,” it tweeted.

Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq said that the bus was on its way from Reckong Peo in Kinnaur to Shimla. “Shooting stones are still falling which is creating problems in carrying out the rescue operation,” he added, the agency reports.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur told the state assembly that there are reports that 50-60 people are trapped under the debris, but the exact number was not known. He said that Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to him and offered all possible help.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Thakur.”PM @narendramodi spoke to Himachal Pradesh CM @jairamthakurbjp regarding the situation in the wake of the landslide in Kinnaur. PM assured all possible support in the ongoing rescue operations,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

Himachal Pradesh has witnessed many cloudbursts, landslides and flash floods this year since rains started in the state. On July 25, nine tourists were killed when boulders fell on the vehicle they were travelling in at Sangla, in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Video footage released by Doordarshan news and news agency ANI showed rocks and heavy debris rolling down into the valley below leading to a bridge collapse and several houses being quashed.
