Manchester City reached their first-ever UEFA Champions League final in the 2020-21 season and have done so with an unbeaten record in the tournament. Having won 11 out of 12 games in the competition, they go into the final with the best record for any team in the 2020-21 season.

Here is Manchester City’s road to Champions League 2020-21 final:

Group stage:

Manchester City were drawn with Olympiacos, Porto and Marseille in group B. In their first match of the group stages, they came back from 0-1 to win 3-1 against Porto, taking them to the top of the group. In the second gameweek, City won comfortably over Marseille away from home with a 0-3 victory.  In the third gameweek, City held on to a firmer grip to the top spot and a spot in the round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Olympiacos. In the fourth gameweek, City sealed a spot in the next round with a 0-1 win over Olympiacos away from home. In the fifth gameweek, the top two teams in the table settled for a 0-0 draw at Porto. 

In the final gameweek, City only needed a draw to seal their top spot in the group, and they won 3-0 over Marseille at Etihad. At the end of group stages, City had the best defensive record in the competition, having conceded only one goal, which was scored by Porto in the opening gameweek.

Knockout games:

City faced German team Borussia Monchengladbach for the round of 16, in which they won 2-0 on both home and away legs. 

In the quarterfinals, City were drawn with another German team, Borussia Dortmund. The first leg was played at City’s home Etihad. Kevin de Bruyne of City broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. But Marco Reus’s goal in the 84th minute provided Dortmund a late equaliser and a crucial away goal. But six minutes later, Phil Foden put City back in front, and the match ended at 2-1. In the second leg, Jude Bellingham’s goal in the 15th minute put Dortmund ahead in the match and tie on away goals. But City hit back with two second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Foden to win 2-1.

In the semifinals, City faced the French giants, PSG. In the first leg at Parc des Princes, City completed yet another comeback after Marquinhos gave PSG the lead in the 15th minute. De Bruyne’s fortuitous cross-turned goal, and Mahrez’s freekick, in the second-half, handed City a 1-2 win. In the second leg, Mahrez’s brace and clinical defensive performance from City put the tie beyond PSG’s reach, and the match ended at 2-0.

Manchester City will be facing Chelsea on May 30 for the Champions League final.
