Following the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in the city and country, a weekend curfew was imposed in Chandigarh on Friday. The curfew will be in effect from 10 pm on Fridays to 5 am on Mondays. Essential services, although, would resume normally during this window. The decision was taken during a meeting of the city’s administration.

Currently, the imposition of weekend curfew, which spreads across Mohali in Punjab, and also Panchkula in Haryana, starts at 10 pm and ends at 5 am. The UT Administration had earlier told that the gates of the Rock Garden would be closed until further orders would be made, and Sukhna lake would also be shut on weekends until the COVID-19 situations would improve. 

The public gathering limit for social, political and religious events was set to 200 people for outdoors and 100 people for indoors. Punjab saw a surge in COVID-19 cases as the daily cases count rocketed to a record high of 4,333 on Thursday, resulting in the state’s aggregate tally to 2,86,816, according to a medical bulletin. The state’s previous biggest surge of 3,477 cases was seen on April 12, this year.

The active COVID-19 cases count in Punjab rose to 30, 033 from 28,250 on Wednesday, as reported by Mint. The state’s death toll also jumped to 7,722 after 51 more people were infected with the coronavirus. It is reported that 40 patients were critical and have been surviving on ventilator support, while 374 are on oxygen support.
