Uttar Pradesh‘s Charthawal assembly constituency was won in 2017 by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the party’s Vijay Kumar Kashyap defeating the Samajwadi Party’s Mukesh Kumar Chaudhary, who came in second. Kashyap’s margin of victory was 23231 votes.

Charthawal is one of the five assembly segments in western UP’s Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha constituency. All five were won by the BJP. For three elections before 2017, Charthawal was won by Mayawat’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

In 2012, the BSP’s Noor Saleem Rana had defeated both Vijay Kumar Kashyap and Mukesh Kumar Chaudhary, in that order, to win the seat.

The BSP and Noor Saleem Rana’s poor third position in Charthawal in 2017 reflected the party’s extreme downturn of fortunes in that year’s assembly election. The BSP slid from 80 seats in 2012 to only 19 in 2017. Its ignominy was matched only by that of the Congress, which won seven.
