The Union Health ministry on Monday warned that several states were showing an upward trend in daily COVID-19 case tally and they needed to act quickly to rein in numbers. Among the states on the list are Assam and Kerala, the two states that recently went to polls. The ministry added that Delhi, one of the worst-hit states was showing early signs of plateauing.

“Some states are showing increasing trends in COVID cases, these states should take required precautionary measures. Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya are among those states,” ANI reports quoting Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in Union Health Ministry.

Aggarwal added that some states, including Delhi, Madhya Pradesh were showing early signs of plateauing/decrease in daily new cases. Delhi is one of the badly-affected states, which has been recording around 18000 cases almost everyday in the past fortnight.

The warning comes amid a surging second wave of COVID-19 that is currently sweeping through India with close to four lakh cases being reported everyday. The country is grappling with the situation as health infrastructure crumbles under the tidal wave of infections. Cries of help have flooded social media with people seeking drugs, hospital admissions and oxygen supplies.

On a positive note, Aggarwal said,”We’re seeing a positive approach in recoveries too. On May 2, the recovery rate was at 78% & on May 3 it climbed up to almost 82%. These are early gains on which we have to work on regularly.”
