While the world is still held back on the idea of metaverse, a fully virtual universe, many public figures have begun considering it as a new frontier to pursue.

Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi is set to become the first Indian vocalist to perform in the metaverse. The 54-year-old singer took to Instagram to promote his metaverse event for India’s 73rd Republic Day.

Mehndi had been teasing the event since January 17th and has uploaded over 12 Instagram posts for the same.

Being the country’s first metaverse concert, the event will have a virtual stage, avatars, and games. The concert is being held by ‘partynite.metaverse’, a country-wide metaverse platform. According to its website, partynite.metaverse is a “digital parallel universe, powered by blockchain.” The platform also allows people to socialise and connect through avatars and join other parties or events.

Furthermore, the virtual universe allows users to claim and sell digital tokens known as NFTs.

The singer announced the concert with a promo poster and attached a link in his Instagram bio to redeem free concert passes.

The concert will include Mehndi’s avatar, who will perform some of his most iconic songs. The event is scheduled to begin at 12:00pm IST on January 26.

While Mehndi is the first Indian celebrity figure to kickstart the idea in the country, the concept of virtual events has long been used by international figures.

Artists like Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, Justin Bieber and Marshmello have taken the virtual route to host concerts after the pandemic struck.

While the idea seems to be gaining prominence internationally, it is still unclear if the metaverse is just a passing fad, or a concept that’ll grow bigger in India.

Earlier this week, music record label T-Series announced its beginning in the metaverse through a collaboration with Hungama TV.

In January, a couple from Tamil Nadu decided to have a virtual Harry Potter-themed wedding reception in the metaverse.

The wedding reception will take place in February where the couple and the guests will join the event through their avatars.
