Just days after the glacier burst in Uttarakhand, authorities have noticed a lake forming on river Rishiganga in the state’s Chamoli district. The Central Water Commission posted a video of the lake on Twitter. The lake is being termed as dangerous by experts and formed from the debris of the avalanche, reports NDTV.

“An artificial lake has formed on river Rishiganga in Chamoli Dist Uttarakhand with length of 350 m height of 60 m with slope of 10deg,” Central Water Commission tweeted.

On being asked about the Rishiganga lake, Garhwal Commission Raman told reporters that their strategy was evolving as the situation unfolds.

“We are coordinating with NTPC officials and scientists in running the rescue operation,” Raman told PTI.

The confirmed death toll in the Uttarakhand disaster rose to 36 with the recovery of two more bodies along the riverbank and 168 people remain missing since Sunday, after an avalanche or a glacier break triggered a surge of water in the Alaknanda river system.

Rescue agencies are still trying to establish contact with 30 people people trapped inside the Tapovan tunnel.

In an apparent change in strategy, the rescuers are now also focusing on drilling through the hardened debris in the choked tunnel in Chamoli district, rather than just shifting mounds of silt and sludge heaped there by the sudden flood.

The aim for now is to set up a “life-saving system”, possibly to pump oxygen into the blocked tunnel.
