Delhi High Court on Wednesday suspended the two-year jail term of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti in a case for assaulting AIIMS security staff and destroying public property, reported PTI. The court also granted him bail in the case.

Justice Suresh Kait also stayed his conviction in the case and sought response from the Delhi government on his plea challenging his conviction and the sentence.

The court will hear the matter on May 20.

A trial court in Delhi, in its verdict, had convicted Bharti in the case after which the MLA was sent to prison on Tuesday.

In his plea before the Delhi High Court, Bharti had sought setting aside of the trial court’s order and to acquit him of all charges.

According to the prosecution, on September 9, 2016, Bharti, along with nearly 300 others, brought down the fence of a boundary wall at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here with a JCB operator.

A magistrate had in January sentenced him to two years in prison.
