The Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday said that the depression over Telangana, which caused heavy rainfall in major parts of the state over the day leaving more than a dozen dead, is likely to weaken in the next 12 hours, ANI reported.

“The depression over Telangana moved further west-northwestwards during past six hours and lay centered over western parts of Telangana about 130 km east­-northeast of Gulbarga (Karnataka) and about 50 km west of Hyderabad at 5:30 am today,” ANI quoted IMD as saying.

It said that the depression is ‘very likely’ to move further west-northwestwards in the next 12 hours, gradually weakening into a ‘well-marked low pressure area’.

As a result, isolated places over the Tamil Nadu districts of Theni, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari will receive light to moderate rain. “Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli today,” the met department warned.

“Thunderstorm with light to moderate rain and heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu tomorrow,” the director of Chennai’s area cyclone centre, regional meteorological centre’ told ANI.

The rains over Telangana killed at least 15 people until Wednesday afternoon, with a wall in Hyderabad collapsing last night. The rains have given rise to a flood-like situation in various parts of the state.
