Talks of Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement have been swirling around since he took a break from international cricket after India crashed out of the ODI World Cup in July last year. And with the Indian Premier League and World Cup T20 likely to be postponed or suspended due the coronavirus pandemic, many believe that the former India captain’s career may be over.
But former England captain Nasser Hussain has said that Dhoni still has a lot to offer to Indian cricket and should not be pushed into early retirement.
“Once Dhoni is gone, there is no getting him back. There are some legends of the game [who are] appreciated while around because they are once-in-a-generation cricketers and don’t push him into retirement too early,” Hussain told Star Sports.
Hussain also said that Dhoni, 38, knows his mental state and would turn up when the selectors pick him. It should not be a question of age, but whether the player is still good enough for the Indian side, opined Hussain.
Dhoni last played for India in the 50-over World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in July, 2019. With the Covid-19 virus bringing most sporting activities across the globe to an abrupt halt, it remains to be seen when Dhoni will get a chance to don the national jersey again.
