Diwali is celebrated by Indians with fervor every year. The other festivals that come before or after it are Dhanteras, Choti Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.

This five-day long celebration begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj.

This year Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 22 and Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on October 26.

Here’s all you need to know about the dates, timings and shubh muhurat for each festival:

Dhanteras

The five-day long celebration of Diwali starts with Dhanteras. According to the Hindu calendar, Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of the Kartika month. This year, Dhanteras is on Saturday, October 22, 2022

The timings of Dhanteras are as follows:-

Dhanteras Puja Muhurat is from 7:01pm to 8:17pm on October 22

Yama Deepam is on October 22, 2022

Pradosh Kaal is from 5:45pm to 8:17pm

Vrishabha Kaal is from 7:01pm to 8:56pm

Choti Diwali

Choti Diwali is another important festival among Hindus which is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Kartika month. 

Every year it is celebrated between Dhanteras and Diwali and this year it falls on October 23, 2022, Sunday. People celebrate this day by lighting diyas, making Rangoli at home, and lighting firecrackers.

The timings of Choti Diwali are as follows:-

Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 06:03pm on October 23 and ends at 05:27pm on October 24 

Kali Chaudas Shub Muhurat starts from 11:40pm on October 23 and stays till 12:31am on October 24

Diwali

Diwali, the auspicious ‘Festival of Lights’ falls on the new moon of the Kartika month every year. It comes exactly after 20 days of the Dussehra celebration and lasts for five long days. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on the third day after Dhanteras on October 24, Monday. In the Hindu calendar, it marks the fifteenth day of the Kartika month.

Diwali 2022 Shubh Muhurat timings:

Amavasya Tithi begins at 05:27pm on October 24, 2022 and ends at 04:18pm on October 25, 2022.

Lakshmi Puja Muhurat remains from 6.54pm to 8:18pm on October 24, 2022.

Govardhan Puja

Generally, Govardhan Puja celebrations occur on the day after Diwali, but due to the Solar Eclipse this year, Govardhan Puja will take place a day later on October 26, Wednesday. 

On this auspicious day, people make small hills of cow dung and soil and prepare Chappan Bhog (56 different kinds of food) to worship Lord Krishna. Followers bathe the idols of Lord Krishna in milk and decorate the idols with new clothes and ornaments.

Govardhan Puja 2022 Shubh Muhurat and timings:

Govardhan Puja Muhurat is from 6:12am on 26 October, 2022

Pratipada Tithi starts from 04:18pm on Oct 25 and ends at 02:42pm on Oct 26.

Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj, an auspicious and important festival among brothers and sisters, is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India on the last day of the five-day festival.

On Bhai Dooj, like Raksha Bandhan- sisters pray for the longevity and well being of their brothers, while brothers promise to always protect their sisters.

Bhai Dooj 2022 Shubh Muhurat and timings:

Bhai Dooj Aparahna Muhurat is from 01:12pm to 03:27pm on October 26.

Dwitiya Tithi will begin from 02:42pm on Oct 26 and ends at 12:45pm on Oct 27.
