KBC Offline Quiz: Edward Jenner discovered the vaccine for which disease?

Options:

A. Polio

B. Smallpox

C. Measles

D. Hepatitis A

Answer: B. Smallpox

Born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire on May17, 1749, Edward Jenner was the eighth of the nine children born to the vicar of Berkeley, the Reverend Stephen Jenner, and his wife Sarah.

During research, Jenner noticed that cowpox infection seemed to protect humans against smallpox. Following this, he inoculated a child with cowpox matter from a blister on the hand of an English milkmaid. Jenner then exposed the boy to smallpox material but the child never fell ill.

Soon, this method of vaccination grew in popularity across the world and eventually replaced variolation, which was the standard before his demonstration. He got the name “Father of Immunology.” In the latter part of the 20th century, a century after Jenner’s death, smallpox was eradicated after a massive surveillance and vaccination program.
