Recently, a photo went viral on social media showing two women basketball teams — one donning red jerseys and another with blue.

The side wearing the blue jerseys were comparatively shorter than the ones in the red wear, which reads ‘USA’ in bold. However, there was clarity over what the team in blue represented as portions of their jerseys have been blurred out.

But users started sharing the image, claiming the team in blue with shorter players was Team India. The picture was circulated with captions implying that it was taken during an Under-16 division game between the United States and India.

A quick search on Facebook shows various pages — including ‘Aly memes’ — posting the same picture with captions hinting at the same claim. Soon the image was widely spread across Facebook and also the micro-blogging platform Twitter with captions taking a dig at the height of the so-called Indian women basketball players.

But, is it really the Indian team?

Well, even at the first look the image is seemingly dubious.

A reverse image Google search lands on the original photo in a Sports Ration article posted on June 19, 2019. In the original photo, ‘El Salvador’, which is a country in Central America, is clearly printed on the blue jerseys.

Furthermore, the report states that a basketball match was held between the United States and El Salvador, which the former won with a score of 114-19.

The image carried by this outlet shows El Salvador written in the front of the blue jerseys, which has been intentionally blurred out in the viral photo.

Sports website AS USA tweeted the scoreline of the game using the same picture.

With all this evidence stacked up, it’s fair to say the image was being shared to spread misinformation and the picture is of Under-16 womens’ basketball teams of the United States and El Salvador.
