An FIR has been registered against celebrity hairstylist Jawed Habib, days after he spat on a woman’s hair during a seminar in Muzzafarnagar.

The FIR has been filed at Police Station Mansurpur, Muzzafarnagar on the information provided by victim Puja Gupta under Section 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person, otherwise than on grave provocation) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, reported The Hindustan Times.

The 58-year-old stylist was caught spitting on a woman’s hair instead of using water, in a purported video that soon started circulating on social media. Het was also heard saying in the clip, “Iss thook mein jaan hai’.

The incident reportedly took place during a training seminar in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar. 

He later uploaded a video apologising for the act. Citing ‘humorous’ intent, he said, “Some words spoken by me during my seminar have hurt a few people. I just want to say one thing… these are professional workshops, as in, they are attended by people from within our profession. When these sessions get very long, we have to make them humorous. What can I say?”

“If you are truly hurt, I apologise from the bottom of my heart. Please forgive me, I’m sorry,” he said in his message. 

Soon after the video of the incident went viral, the woman from the clip, identified as Pooja Gupta, opened up about her experience. Speaking to Hindustan Times, she said, “I have become a laughing stock for the entire world. I had gone there to learn and not get humiliated,” adding, “I feel my image has been publically eroded and I seek its restoration. I want him to publicly apologise to me”.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) had summoned Habib on January 11 for explaining his action.

The Chairperson, Rekha Sharma said, “We have written to the Delhi Commissioner of Police, and DGP, UP to take action against Jawed Habib. We are also summoning the relevant parties,” reported Hindustan Times.
