An FIR has been filed against Facebook India policy chief Ankhi Das and two users of the social media platform in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, the police said on Tuesday.

A case was registered against Das, and two other users of Facebook identified as Ram Sahu from Mungeli (Chhattisgarh) and Vivek Sinha in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore late Monday night on the complaint of Awesh Tiwari, a Raipur-based journalist, police told PTI. Das is Facebook’s Director, Public Policy, India, South, and Central Asia.

This comes after a report was published by The Wall Street Journal on Friday, which said that the social media giant ignored the company’s hate speech policy. According to the WSJ report, Facebook allowed posts in India by BJP leaders that called for violence against minorities and Das is said to be the executive behind the policy.

Tiwari said he lodged the case after he was named in a complaint by Das to Delhi police, who alleged that she has been receiving death threats through online posts. According to the FIR, Tiwari, in his complaint, said that on August 16, he started receiving threat messages and calls on WhatsApp after he published a post on his Facebook account related to the WSJ report .

He alleged that Das, Sahu, and Sinha were trying to defame him by spreading religious hatred and his life is under threat.

After the report by WSJ, a tug of war has been going on between India’s ruling party BJP and the Congress on Twitter.

The Congress on Tuesday wrote to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing the social media company of “interfering” with the country’s electoral democracy in India. The party demanded a time-bound high-level inquiry into the conduct of Facebook India.
