The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said that five states –
Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu – accounted for 71.10%
of the total 28,903 COVID-19 cases reported in the country on Wednesday, and were
also seeing a surge in daily numbers. The sixth, Kerala, on the other hand, has
been seeing a decline in infections over the last month, PTI reported.

With the addition of Kerala, the six states account for 83.91% of new
cases, as per data by the ministry.

A numerical mammoth in terms of total cases, Maharashtra accounted for
more than 61.8% of all cases in the country. The state saw 17,864 new daily
cases on Wednesday.

Maharashtra was followed by Kerala with 1,970 new cases, and Punjab,
with 1,463 new cases.

Breaching the 2.34 lakh mark, on the other hand, total number of cases
in India stood at 2,34,406 on Wednesday. This comprised 2.05% of global infections.

“Maharashtra, Kerala and Punjab account for 76.4 per cent of
India’s total active cases, with Maharashtra alone contributing nearly 60 per
cent,” PTI quoted the health ministry as highlighting.

Fifteen states and Union Territories have not reported any COVID-19
deaths in the last 24 hours.
