With the ongoing pandemic, our lives are now confined within the four walls and our daily dose of entertainment far and few between.
However, with the recent splurge of content on the OTT platforms, there’s an opportunity for respite after slogging away on your laptops throughout the weekdays.
Here are five underrated web series to binge-watch this weekend:
1. Jamtara: Sabka Number Ayega (Netflix)
Directed by Soumendra Padhi, Jamtara is a story of small-time criminals, who are puppets in the hand of a crime lord, implementing a phishing scam. Although the show is based on Jamtara, a district in Jharkhand, the larger themes of corruption, the familiar underdog’s tale, the good vs evil narrative, and the simplistic family intricacies at the center of it, gives Jamtara a wider appeal.
Starring Sparsh Shrivastav, Amit Sial, Monika Panwar, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aksha Pardasany among others, the 10-episode-long show is guaranteed to be a fascinating watch.
2. Kingdom (Netflix)
After the whirlwind that Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite created, the rest of the world is no more a stranger to the jaw-dropping cinematic experience that the Korean film industry has to offer. And from Korea comes this breathtaking series Kingdom.
The prelude to the series is simple, a zombie epidemic is haunting the Joseon-era Korea. And if Train to Busan (2016) is anything to go by, Korean’s sure do goddamn amazing Zombie flicks.
The visuals are stunning and the show doesn’t look to capitalise on cheap jump-scares but will haunt your dreams with the realism and narrative of the description.
Kingdom was first released in January last year, with the second season hitting the mini-screens on March 13 this year. With each season six-episode-long, hold your heart tight and sit for the ride right away!
3. The Creative Indians (Netflix)
A bit away from fiction, The Creative Indians on Netflix is a docu-series of interviews with Indians who have showcased an imaginative bent of mind.
Shot entirely on iPhones, it tries de-mystifying and de-constructing the lives, journeys, and processes of the most impactful creative professionals and in India across industries like Cinema, Music, Fashion, Dance, Photography, Advertising, and more.
The vibrant settings add to the feel of the interview.
Season 4 of the show came out this year and it features interviews with actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee and Imtiaz Ali, along with artist Vijayakumar Arumugam and Graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee among others.
4. All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur (Amazon Prime Video)
It’s a bit of a stretch to call All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur underrated, however, the show has grabbed the eyeballs of only the football fanatics.
Even if you have no interest in the sport, the series does call for a watch, as it presents a look into the behind-the-scenes working of a premier football club. Narrated by actor Tom Hardy, it’s a fascinating watch to see how a multi-million-dollar club operates on a day to day basis.
Six episodes of the series are already out and three more will release on September 14.
5. Upload (Amazon Prime Video)
From the television writer Greg Daniels, the man behind The Office (US), Parks and Recreation and recently Space Force, the show perfectly fits the bill of a binge-able show for the weekend.
Starring Robbie Amell and Andy Allo, Upload deals with the afterlife. A man (Robbie Amell) crashes his car and gets grievously injured. However, his girlfriend, instead of letting him die, “uploads” his consciousness into a world of virtual reality in which he will “live” with other non-dead people forever. The said world is a lot like our real-world — except it comes with in-app purchases and bugs.
Upload is has a humourous overtones, yet, it’s Black Mirror-esque core makes you uncomfortable.
